Prepare yourself for not just the 5 favorites, but also a whole lot of love because the Mary Poppins musical at The Muny in St. Louis is most definitely my spoonful of sugar. After all I do live, breath and dream all things London so naturally a production of Mary Poppins is one that I will fawn over. And believe me when I say that I’ve got the pictures to prove it when it comes to my much love for the city across the pond. I might even share a few with you right here!

5 Mary Poppins Musical Favorites At The Muny In St. Louis

The musical Mary Poppins has landed in Forest Park (with the perfect nanny arriving via umbrella) and it’s a show that’s fun for both young and old. I took my 10-year-old daughter as my guest for media night and the weeks leading up to the production were spent talking non stop about Cherry Tree Lane.

London Times

London is by far my favorite city in the world. My husband and I traveled there clear back in 2005 and it was so amazing. One day we will return. (Maybe like in Mary Poppins Returns. *wink*) I said that I would share with you some pictures and you will find them below!

It was an epic trip and while there I just kept thinking about the magic of Cherry Tree Lane. I even captured my love for Mary Poppins in pictures that I took while there!

The rooftops seem to just scream out Step in Time.

Of course I had to take a picture of the bird woman and you know that I thought Feed the Birds when I did!

And now all about the musical Mary Poppins!

How many awards has Mary Poppins won?

Much like the musical Chicago, I wanted to divide this one into two types since Mary Poppins has won awards for both the broadway musical and the classic Walt Disney film.

5 Academy Award wins for the original film:

  • Best Actress – Julie Andrews
  • Best Original Song – “Chim Chim Cher-ee”
  • Best Music Score
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Visual Effects

Mary Poppins is definitely one of the most popular Disney movies of all time. Filled with unforgettable songs and has become a treasure that began in 1964.

Tony Award: Best Scenic Design

Olivier Award: Best Actress in a Musical and Best Theatre Choreographer

Long before any National tours, the musical opened late in 2003 in the West End. From there, the November of 2006 version opened as a Broadway production at the New Amsterdam Theatre with some slight changes from the original.

Mary Poppins Musical

The musical (like the film version) is based on the children’s book by PL Travers. It’s the story of the Banks family with an enchanting mixture of irresistible story telling and musical theatre. Enter Mary Poppins! She takes charge of the Banks children in a way that isn’t expected at all by their parents.

The children’s first outing with their new nanny is just as colorful as my first recollection in childhood and there’s high spirits throughout. With just a little bit of magic young Jane and Michael experience memorable adventures and their parent’s eyes are opened to the true meaning of family. Mary Poppins indeed fulfills her calling and has a profound effect on this heartwarming household.

You’ll see the Banks family lives in a whole new way. By far one of the best musical performances that I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen Mary Poppins done before.

What musical numbers are in Mary Poppins?

You’ll be dazzled with the iconic original music but also new songs that set the stage musical apart from film. See if you can spot the additional music vs. classic songs below!

  • Cherry Tree Lane
  • The Perfect Nanny
  • Practically Perfect
  • All Me Own Work
  • Jolly Holiday
  • Let’s Hope She Will Stay
  • Being Mrs. Banks
  • Winds Do Change
  • A Spoonful of Sugar
  • Precision and Order
  • A Man Has Dreams
  • Feed the Birds
  • Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
  • The Winds May Blow
  • Twists and Turns
  • Chim Chim Cher-ee
  • Brimstone and Treacle
  • Let’s Go Fly a Kite
  • Good for Nothing
  • Step in Time
  • Down the Chimney
  • Anything Can Happen
  • Give Us the Word

Lots of old favorites and many new ones! As you can tell from the musical numbers, it’s longer than most performances that you will see on the Muny’s stage, but so worth staying out late.

And now for my 5 Mary Poppins musical favorites…

Favorite Song

My husband laughed when I told him my favorite, because it’s so not his favorite But I love, love, love Feed the Birds. Okay and I love Let’s Go Fly a Kite. Basically I love all the music from this musical. So do I really have to pick just one? But I will. It’s definitely the bird one. Makes me feel all warm and reminiscent of childhood for some reason. I think that even as a child I knew that it was a pivotal moment in which the family came together.

Favorite Character

While the title role of Mary Poppins goes to Jeanna De Waal and she was fantastic, I have to go with Corbin Bleu in the role of Bert as the favorite. Could have started off being due to the fact that my daughter is obsessed over his part in the High School Musical franchise, but he is really an amazing actor and performer. So talented. His tap dancing caused my daughter’s eyes to light up.

Side note: My husband went to East High’s rival (the Highland Rams) in Salt Lake City and his dad graduated from East!

You knew that I’d share the picture to prove it!

Favorite Set Piece

Again must I pick just one? This is proving to be really difficult. So I’m totally going to go off the rails here and give more than one. Sure I know that it’s 5 favorites, but I did disclose early on that this would be more than just the 5’s! I absolutely loved the usage of the giant visual screens on stage for this one. Many of the images displayed were paintings and it was very much a nod to the sidewalk chalk drawings that Bert did in the park. Loved those. And the living Muny trees were perfection for this particular set. Our very own Forest Park trees were part of Regent’s Park! The rotating floor element and over all set design with the Bank’s home was beautifully done. I think the creative team really outdid themself with this one!

Favorite Moment

There were so very many great moments in this musical. Seriously so many fantastic dance numbers and the vocals are filled with talent. It was difficult to pick just one, but my favorite moment has to be the large tap dance sequence with all of the chimney sweeps. The timing of each step was impeccable. Fits perfectly with Step in Time. Our toes were tapping again and again.

Favorite Snack

You cannot go wrong with this giant pretzel from The Muny’s concessions stand. It’s a Bavarian pretzel that is soft and delicious with just the right amount of salt. Pair it with some cheese dip and make a meal out of it! I had a crazy day so not going to lie, that pretzel was dinner.
