Over the years there have actually been quite a bit of musical theatre productions with spooky elements featured on stage at the Fabulous Fox. Let’s take a look back on some of the , but first… Beetlejuice!

Beetlejuice
The musical stage is set at the Fabulous Fox with a show that will have audience members in awe. You’ll indeed have a hauntingly good time with Beetlejuice and all the gang. For a show that is all about death, it sure is lively! This stage adaptation of Beetlejuice The original broadway production ran from 2019 to earlier this year. (It closed on January 8, 2023.)
This night of the living dead cult classic film has aged right along with us into a musical adaptation that will have you laughing out loud. And now that we have all gotten older… it does have some zingers that are more appropriate for adult audiences, so don’t be rushing to take your young kids to this one. Unless you want to answer some interesting questions. Just thought I should throw out that warning for anyone questioning whether or not to take the kids.
Beetlejuice is the perfect celebration of the Halloween season. It tells the story of Lydia One fateful night childless married couple Barbara and Adam (played by Megan McGinnis and Will Burton) find themselves very much dead and coerced by a crude ghost (played by Connor Gallagher) to trick a very much alive brooding teen named Lydia (played by Isabella Esler) to say the name Beetlejuice three times. The stage show is filled with fun musical numbers, special effects and dark humor, this updated version for a modern audience makes for a fun date night.

Isabella Esler will blow you away with her strong, beautiful voice and I dare say you will feel like you are witnessing the beginnings of greatness. In fact, you’ll be shocked to learn that she recently graduated from high school. So much talent and I cannot wait to see which stage production she does next.
It’s Showtime!
Not just the main characters, but this entire theatre group will have you saying “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.” If you missed the original production on Broadway, now is the time to see Beetlejuice at the Fabulous Fox now through October 22nd. See it before it leaves the Lou!

Is Beetlejuice kid friendly?
Everyone of course has their own comfort level and opinions on what is appropriate content for their children, but I do think that it’s important for parents to know this is probably not the best musical for the whole family. It’s one that is geared more for adults so don’t expect it to be PG in nature like the film.
What other haunting musicals have been on stage in St. Louis Best Haunting Musicals?
Unlike a traditional musical, Halloween musicals have become increasingly popular over the years. People just like those dark musicals. While I do enjoy suspenseful musicals, I’ll be the first to admit that true horror musicals (that includes horror movies) are so not really my jam. If you like dark musicals then I’m sure you’ve seen more than a few on this list!
Best Haunting Musicals
Tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Little Shop of Horrors
The Phantom of the Opera – Such a beloved musical and my all time favorite. This Andrew Lloyd Webber tells a love story set to all sorts of spooky music.
Addams Family – Wednesday Addams is really popular right now.
Wicked – Not exactly haunting, this musical does involve magic and the Wicked Witch of the West. So I’d say that can be thought of as spooky.
Into the Woods
Go Beyond Haunting Musicals
Looking for a thriller and suspenseful play? I highly recommend The Mouse Trap by Agatha Christie.
