What is the history of National Donut Day?

The history of National Donut Day isn’t widely known, but I’m going to share with you what I learned recently about my favorite breakfast treat. The holiday was actually created by the Salvation Army in 1938 so it’s not an even remotely new celebratory day at all. It was originally set up as a day to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. These Salvation Army volunteers were known as “Donut Lassies” and would travel to the front lines of war in order to serve donuts to soldiers. The donuts were a morale boost for the soldiers, and really helped to keep them going during difficult times.

Today, National Donut Day is celebrated by donut shops all over the United States. As a way to remember the past and give back to the present and future. Many shops offer free or discounted donuts on this day. It is also a popular day to volunteer at the Salvation Army or other organizations that help people in need. Read on to find out some unique ways and ideas for celebrating this special day!

Here are some ways to celebrate National Donut Day:

  • Visit your local donut shop and enjoy a free or discounted donut.
  • Volunteer at the Salvation Army or another organization that helps people in need.
  • Make your own donuts at home. There are many recipes available online.
  • Donate to a charity that supports the military or other causes that are important to you.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, National Donut Day is a fun and delicious way to show your appreciation for this treat with a rich history!

Here are some additional fun facts about donuts:

  • The first recorded mention of donuts was in 1847.
  • The first donut machine was invented in 1920.
  • The most popular type of donut in the United States is the glazed donut.
  • The world’s largest donut was made in 2016 in Wichita, Kansas. It weighed over 2,000 pounds and was over 10 feet wide.
  • National Donut Day is celebrated in over 30 countries.
