DIY Nativity Scene Silhouette Wood Slice Ornaments

I always enjoy creating handmade ornaments from year to year. It’s something that I watched my mother do throughout my childhood. Every single winter holiday classroom party with my mom as a room mother consisted of a Christmas ornament that she either made for every kid in the class or a craft set up to make an ornament to take home. Such wonderful memories!

Each year I like to create ornaments to give to family members, friends, and neighbors. It’s an easy DIY gift that they can use for years to come. One of my favorite types is wood slice ornaments. I think there is just something about the rustic style and simplicity of it all. There’s also just so many different styles and ways to make ornaments out of wood slices.

A few years ago I created Nativity ornaments that went on to be featured in THE Country Sampler Farmhouse Style magazine! Such a surprise that is a fond memory and I was so very honored to be included in a print magazine. The ornaments I made back then are still a favorite. Simplicity with vinyl a coat of paint! I created the DIY wood slice ornaments using the excess vinyl that’s left over from the image cut out by a Silhouette machine. Typically you would weed off that outer edge of the vinyl and then place the image itself on whatever it is that you are wanting to decorate. However, I used the outer edge of the vinyl as a stencil. It adhered ever so nicely to the wood slices and prevented bleeding when I used black paint to darken inside the The whole process turned the wood slice ornaments into a silhouette look and I really love how they turned out.

See the original Nativity silhouette ornaments HERE.

Other ways to make wood slice ornaments: The following ornaments are similar in concept but less messy to make. No paint involved!

Nativity DIY Wood Slice Christmas Ornaments

Make these DIY Nativity scene ornaments to use as Christmas party favors or stocking stuffers!

What you’ll need:

Wood slices (or scrap wood) – Most of the time the circular wood pieces that are sold at a craft store for the purpose of making ornaments will already have a small hole drilled into the top, perfect for stringing some jute twine through. Some of the unfinished wood slice craft ornaments even come with the twine included for an almost all in one craft project!

Black vinyl – Using permanent vinyl in the color black will give the true silhouette look.

Jute twine or festive Christmas ribbon (if your wood slices don’t come with these supplies included) – You can dress up your ornaments or keep them more simple depending on the type of hanger you choose to use.

Vinyl cutting machine – Popular brands like Cricut and Silhouette work great for this project.

Nativity SVG file – There are so many beautiful nativity silhouettes in the form of SVG files available on Etsy.

Get the cut file I used HERE.

Need a vinyl cutter?

I love the rustic farmhouse charm of these ornaments. It’s important to not that this time I didn’t use regular vinyl. While heat press vinyl or regular permanent vinyl will adhere perfectly to wood slice ornaments, I chose to try it with DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers from local shop Vinyl Fun. The process was very similar to regular vinyl but the heat press made the DTF really fuse into the wood. The looks was like the painted ones I had done previously, but without the mess of paint!
