It’s no secret that I love decorating for the various holidays and seasons. Summertime and July 4th just go hand in hand so it’s always fun to create crafts to use as decor. While there are so many great Fourth of July decorations to choose from, a patriotic starburst wreath is an excellent option and such an easy DIY!

What is a patriotic holiday?
In the United States we celebrate several different patriotic holidays. These holidays are plentiful and are in the following order with some of the dates varying by the year, but most fall on a Monday:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- President’s Day
- Memorial Day Flag Day
- Independence Day
- Constitution Day
- Election Day
- Labor Day
- Veterans Day
- Bill of Rights Day
All patriotic holidays are important and celebrate American pride.

DIY Patriotic Starburst Wreath
Supplies needed for this 4th of July craft :
- One piece of cardboard 15 inch x 15 inch in size
- One full size dinner plate that is approximately 11 inch in diameter
- One salad plate that is approximately 7 inch in diameter
- 75 to 80 paper straws that are in a mixture of American flag colors and prints
- Cardstock paper in red, white and blue paper
- Elmers glue (or hot glue)
- Scissors
- Craft knife
- Pencil
- Wooden dowel
What you’ll do to create this 4th of July craft:
Step 1: Place the dinner plate on top of the piece of cardboard and then draw a circle around it. Cut out the circle using either a craft knife or pair of scissors.
Step 2: Place the salad plate on the cardboard circle (in the center) and draw around it with a pencil.
Step 3: Cut out the smaller circle to create a cardboard ring.
Step 4: Next, cut a ring in the same manner (but from white cardstock paper) and then glue it on top of the cardboard ring. Now you’ve got the base of your wreath!
Step 5: Now start gluing the straws to the base. You’ll do this by first placing the tip of the straw in line with the center circle. Glue each straw to the base of the wreath in a pattern alternating between different colors and/or prints. Be sure to leave small but equal gaps between the straws all the way around. (You’ll be filling the gaps later with shorter straws.)
Step 6: Cut the remaining straws to 3/4 the original length and use the smaller straws to fill in the gaps.
Instructions for making paper flowers:
Step 1: First you’ll start out by cutting large circles that are approximately 3” in diameter and small circles approximately 2” in diameter from various colors of cardstock paper. To complete one flower you’ll need 5 circles. Make as many flowers as you’d like!
Step 2: Fold one circle in a quarter by first folding the circle in half and then folding it again in half. This will create a nice segment.
Step 3: Draw a curve along the edge and cut around it.
Step 4: Repeat this process with all the 5 circles.
Step 5: Next, snip just a small part off the corner of each segment. This will create a hole in the center of the flower.
Step 6: Next unfold the flower. There will be lines along each of the petals. Now cut along one of the lines to open up the flower. Doing this will create your first layer.
Step 7: Cut one petal off from the second flower, two from the third flower, three from the fourth flower and four from the fifth flower.
Step 8: Now it’s time to give the flower petals a three dimensional shape! You’ll do this by applying glue at the end of each petal (along the edge) and then gluing them together.
Step 9: Then curl the edges of each flower layer outwards with a wooden dowel. Repeat the same over and over again with all the layers of the flowers.
Step 10: The next step is gluing the layers together. You’ll do this by taking the largest flower layer and then applying glue along the center. From there you will gently press the second largest in to join.
Step 11: Simply keep adding layers with glue until all five are glued together.
Your paper rose is now ready to attach to your paper straw wreath!
You can even create multi-color paper roses!
