Easy Homemade Sure Jell Freezer Jam Recipe
Remember when I posted a recipe for homemade strawberry freezer jam awhile ago and told my story about working at an apple orchard during high school? And how I sunk all 4 tires of my grandfather’s car in the muddy strawberry patch? We are talking mud up to the gas tank. Such good times. You can read more about that fabulous story here.
But what I left out from the story… The orchard I worked at had fields and fields for people to pick local strawberries. It was a great place for the area teenagers to have a part-time job since it was seasonal work only in the fall and spring. Gave us the winter and summers off! To this day, sinking my grandfather’s car in Pence’s Orchard strawberry fields has become the stuff of local legend.

How to make sure jell freezer jam:
With just a few steps, delicious homemade jam is so easy to make and a great way to use up those pints of strawberries you get from your own berry patch or orchard.
When it comes to freezer jam, it’s a recipe that doesn’t really take a lot of time. And it stores so well in the freezer, you can enjoy fresh berries in the middle of winter! It really is the perfect jam and so easy to make.
What’s the difference between freezer jam and traditional jam?
Unlike traditional jams, freezer jam usually doesn’t involve cooking. (If you’d like to turn hard fruits, like apples, into freezer jam then you will need to cook long enough to soften the fruit for mashing.) Because less cooking is involved, the consistency of freezer jam will be runnier as opposed to the jam that is more set up due to the heating of a pectin thickener. With freezer jam you will also have a fresher fruit flavor and brighter color since the heat used in traditional jam tends to break down the fruit and dull it’s color.
Sure Jell Freezer Jam Recipe
This is the perfect recipe for making a large batch or small quantity. Simply use an extra box of sure jell pectin to double batch the recipe!
What you will need to make :
2 quarts of berries or fresh fruit – Keep in mind that berries (especially fresh strawberries) will smash nicely without heating, but other types of fresh fruit (i.e., apples) will need to be cooked to soften some before smashing.
8 cups of sugar – If you prefer a less sweet jam, use less sugar (only about 6 cups of sugar).
3/4 cups of water – I you prefer a thinner consistency of jam, use more water (works really great for making an ice cream topping).
1 Sure-Jell box of pectin (or any no-cook freezer jam fruit pectin mixture will work)
Freezer-grade containers for your jam (most everything we buy now is, just check the label to make sure it’s freezer-safe)
What you’ll do:
Step 1: Wash berries (or other type of fruit) and cut up into smaller pieces.
Step 2: Mash berries in a large bowl with a potato masher. (Or you can use a food processor.)
Step 3: Add sugar and water.
Step 4: Prepare the Sure-Jell using the recipe on the box and then stir into berry mixture.
Step 4: Prepare the Sure-Jell with the recipe on the pectin box and then stir into strawberry mixture.
Step 5: Use a canning funnel to pour into freezeable containers.
Step 6: When ready to use, just thaw jam!.
* Store in plastic containers or other freezer safe storage containers for up to one year.
DIY Gift Idea
A jar of jam makes a great gift! Simply pour jam in mason jars with a cute piece of square fabric tied around the lid at the top of each jar. Or create a jam set with multiple smaller glass jars.
Such a cute gift idea!
How long does freezer jam last?
Freezer jam stores so well in the freezer, making it possible to have fresh fruit flavors in the middle of winter! For best quality, freezer jam will stay good in the freezer for up to one year. Once thawed, it will need to be refrigerated and used within 3 weeks.
