History of the Alice in Wonderland Cat
The Cheshire Cat is just one of the well loved characters from Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland. His somewhat eccentric and confusing conversations with Alice have actually become the favorite quotes of many. He’s a mischievous fellow and it’s definitely quite fun to analyze his thoughts!
We’re All Mad Here
“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.
“I don’t much care where—” said Alice.
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.
“—so long as I get somewhere,” Alice added as an explanation.
“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”
“In that direction,” the Cat said, waving its right paw round, “lives a Hatter: and in that direction,” waving the other paw, “lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they’re both mad.”
“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked.
“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.
“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.” —

One can easily see why the above interaction between Alice and the Cheshire Cat is a fan favorite. It also begs the question as to whether or not Lewis Carroll in fact identified the most with the grinning feline. Or if he found a kinship in the Mad Hatter himself. Much can be compared and contrasted for sure. I’d be willing to bet that there was a bit of each character found within Carroll. After all it was his masterpiece and so often the stories come from an author’s soul.
