How to Personalize Your Christmas Tree with Travel Ornaments

When it comes to Christmas decorating, I love, love, love Christmas ornaments. And I have a lot of ornaments. An entire box of Christmas ornaments from my old child even!

I’ve never been one to have what I would call a designer Christmas tree with all the matching ornaments, well thought out color scheme, and perfect type of garland to coordinate the overall aesthetic. Our tree is definitely eclectic with it’s collection of small ornaments, new ornaments, vintage ornaments, glass ornaments, and elementary school crafted ornaments. Nothing matches on our tree and that’s fine by me.

Travel Christmas Tree

Over 20 years ago I started collecting a very special type of ornament. Each time we would take a trip or go on vacation, I would be sure to get a  and over time that is what led to our themed tree. An entire tree of travel ornaments!

Around the World Travel Ornaments

I’m pleased with how our travel Christmas ornament filled tree has come together over the years. Each and every ornament is a treasured souvenir and symbolizes our favorite places that we have visited together as a family.

Favorite Places

Our travel tree is a mod podge of recent travels, vacations with our kids, road trips, travels from days gone by, and everything in between. It in itself is a travel blog! As we decorate the tree each year it gives us the chance to reflect on the trips we’ve taken and to talk about all the fun we had. It also gives us the opportunity to talk about future travels and where we would like to go next year. This tradition has become so much fun for my family and one of our favorite things.

The only ornament that is missing from our travels? I wish that I had found an Eiffel Tower ornament in Paris when my husband and I went there back in 2005. Next trip to Europe I guess…

And as you can see, the bottom of the tree is somewhat empty because we have a 3-year-old living here. Ha!

While I do love having a whole tree dedicated to our travels, it’s also fun to have a separate family tree filled will all the ornaments our kids have made at school and ones that they will one day have in their own box of ornaments from growing up.

How to create a travel tree:

Gather travel ornaments as you travel.

Store in a bin that is accessible throughout the year so you can add to it as you travel.

Decide on a great place to set up your tree.

Decorate your tree with all the travel ornaments!

Additional Travel Tree Ideas and Tips

Most souvenir shops are carrying Christmas tree ornaments because travel lovers are really getting into that sort of thing but if you can’t find one in a specific place, there are way to still memorialize the trip with an ornament!

Travel photos: Print off favorite photos from your trip and create some simple frame ornaments. It truly adds the right personal touch.

Postcards: Use postcards from your trip to create DIY ornaments with some red ribbon glued around the edges.

Tickets and maps: Places tickets from events into clear globe ornaments or roll maps into a cylinder for an ornament keepsake.

Finishing touches: Add some garland, fairy lights, berry sprigs, and other holiday decor or ornaments if you prefer.

Types of Artificial Christmas Trees

Traditional: These trees are the typical tree that’s classic with a full shape and lush branches.

Slim: Ideal for smaller spaces, these trees have a profile that is more narrow and are often perfect for minimalist style.

Flocked: These trees have a natural element featuring layers of faux snow that create a winter wonderland look.

Pre-Lit: These trees have lights already built in to save you time from having to string yourself.

Realistic: Usually more expensive, these trees have needles that resemble real pine needles.

Non-traditional: Trees in colors that are not green like silver, pink, blue and white.

At our house we are fans of artificial Christmas trees. Mainly because it makes life easier to have the tree already to go each year. Another reason is the fact that a real tree can be so messy, dropping the needles everywhere. For our family it’s also just more economical. Especially when I like to put up more than one tree for the Christmas season. *wink*

Where to buy the perfect tree:

We recently were sent a brand new artificial tree from King of Christmas and it’s the perfect tree for the library room in our house (that’s what our kids call the front living room, the library). King of Christmas has so many different faux Christmas trees (and even Christmas ornaments and other decor) to choose from. I’m talking so many pretty trees, from flocked to pre-lit to realistic to non-traditional and all in different heights. Our new tree has gorgeous LED lights and it’s the perfect height for our space at 7 1/2 feet tall.

Additional features:

Branches that fold down for quick and easy assembly.

Realistic and inspired by nature branches.

Remote light operation.

Power pole that goes down the center of tree so no need to plug in each section.

Bottom line? Our new tree from King of Christmas is amazing and I loved decorating it with all our treasure travel ornaments. Now for me to shop for a new Christmas tree topper (also available at King of Christmas). Because finally our tree is the right size that I can fit one on top!

Have yourself a very Merry Christmas!
