The ever popular musical reimagining of the biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors has arrived at The Muny in Forest Park! Long been called one of the most enduring shows of all time, it’s quite fitting that the Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat musical closes out the 104th season of Muny magic. The Muny’s director even shared his sentiments at the beginning of the show when he mentioned the comparisons with the flooding and heat index that our area has been experiencing. It really has been quite biblical around here!

The Muny season has come to a close for us. I loved being able to help promote all the Muny magic on my blog and I’m incredibly honored to be part of their media list. Last night my daughter and I were able to attend the Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat musical for media night and was it ever amazing. Colorful and fun, it’s a stunner and quite arguably the best show of the season.

Coat Drive for the Little Bit Foundation
This season The Muny has partnered with The Little Bit Foundation. A new coat drive is taking place during this run of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, from August 12-18.
No child should ever go to school without a warm coat on. This amazing organization serves 14,000 students in 48 school communities here in St. Louis area with clothing, school supplies and other basic needs.
Last night we had the opportunity to donate a new winter coat to The Little Bit Foundation. It’s so wonderful that The Muny did a coat drive during Joseph. Perfectly fitting. And it came at a time when this particular foundation really needed even more help. The recent flooding in our area actually made its way to their offices, destroying so many donations that were intended to be given to kids at the start of this school year.
Look for the collecting stations near the two entrances of The Muny Main Box Office and Lichtenstein Plaza – the free seat area that is at the very top of the theatre). You can drop off new coats for students, PreK-12th grade, each night of the performances. This is such a great opportunity give back. Let’s do what we can to help kids to stay warm this fall and winter by donating new coats at The Muny!
You can also donate directly to The Little Bit Foundation’s Amazon Wishlist.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Musical
Most people know the story from the Book of Genesis about Joseph’s coat given to him by his father Jacob and his jealous brothers. They also are quick to associate Donny Osmond with the stage productions of the truly timeless Old Testament tale. He has after all been the title role of Joseph close to 2000 times and also starred in a movie version. But most do not know the background of this production and how it came to be.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat actually didn’t start out on stage as traditional musical theatre. In fact it was originally developed for a school choir of all things. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice were asked to create a cantata that had a “pop” feel to it. And so in the late 1960’s the production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was born!

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Musical
With the help of a main character narrator, the audience is led on a series of adventures where young Joseph (comically depicted in the musical to be rather annoying thinking he’s better than his brothers) goes from being the favorite son of Jacob to a valued slave in the house of Egyptian noble Potiphar to living in a jail cell to being Pharaoh’s right-hand man. Only to then return back to his family in the end and be revered by his brother’s for his humility.
How many Tony Awards has Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat won?
Despite its massive success, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has never won any Tony Awards. And now for my 5 Muny musical favorites…
Since this is the final show of the season, I decided to bring a twist this time for my 5 favorites! I bring you…
Ivy and my 5 Muny musical favorites!
Favorite Song
There are a multitude of musical genres to be found in this production with iconic pop songs, and a parody of French ballads. It’s the first musical of this kind for my daughter to see so I will say that at the age of 10 she did question the fact that the music she interpreted as “the 80’s” shouldn’t have been in a musical with a bible story since it was not the right time period. Ha!
Ivy did particularly enjoy those “80’s musical numbers” and her favorites were surrounding Pharaoh. My favorite goes to Close Every Door. While I usually like catchy and fun in musicals, this song is just so very beautiful. Jason Gotay gave a stirring rendition of this touching song. And I must say that it’s no surprise that Andrew Lloyd Webber went on many years later to compose The Phantom of the Opera. Felt very connected there.
Favorite Character
Ivy’s favorite character(s) were the rats performed by the Muny Kids. Pretty sure but it’s what she connected with. I’m looking forward to seeing Jason Gotay perfom later this week at The Blue Strawberry in the Central West End. (My husband and I are attending to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary.) He was amazing in this production of Joseph. And as before mentioned, I’m still impressed with his Close Every Door. But that narrator. She has to get my favorite character and really directed the feel of the entire show. Jessica Vosk has talent that doesn’t come along often. So glad that she pursued her dreams and walked out onto that Broadway stage.
Side note. Jessica Vosk threw out the first pitch a the Cardinals vs. Yankees game on August 5th. We were in attendance because our oldest performed at the game with his school’s marching band. This actress can sing and play baseball!
Favorite Set Piece
Quite the variety of styles went into this stage. From moving set pieces to the use of video screens, this production made use of it all. Ivy enjoyed all the color that was brought into the production and I in turn liked the set of the market in the first act. It was all the little details that of an ancient market that were not forgotten.
Favorite Moment
Ivy loved that, instead of arriving on a chariot, Joseph came back to his homeland in a vintage convertible. She found that to be hilarious. My favorite moment went to when narrator Jessica Vosk made sure that the Muny Kids received a standing ovation. It showed the connection with the cast and also that even seasoned talent remember when they began. A truly touching moment indeed.
Favorite Snack
One of my favorites is always a diet soda and Ivy enjoyed the North Star Frosted Cookies N’ Cream Shake from The Muny’s concession stand. There are so many different beverages and delicious ice cream treats to choose from. If you haven’t yet this season then be sure to try out a few yummy Muny treats next season!
