Why are leather earrings so popular?
There are actually quite a few benefits when it comes to wearing leather earrings. These types of earrings are not just durable, but are so very versatile when dressing up or down. Plus, they are rather comfortable to wear given the fact that they are often so light weight. Such an easy way to accessorize your look!
What are leather earrings made out of?
Leather earrings are often made from a variety of different types of leather, just depending on preference. The majority of DIY leather earrings aren’t even made from genuine leather at all, but rather a faux leather that is a man-made material made to look like real leather. Faux leather (usually made from polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, and polyester) is a popular choice due to it being less expensive, more environmentally friendly and vegan. It’s also not uncommon for leather earrings to be plain. Often times the cute earrings are even decorated with beads and charms or given the layering effect with various color and texture.

How To Make Your Own
You can actually make your own gorgeous earrings at a fraction of the price. Many people find that it’s also a great way to use up leather scraps. It’s no secret that I struggle to cut straight lines (I admitted this on television), so making my own faux leather earrings is most definitely out. Unless of course I’m using a craft cutting machine (Silhouette or Cricut machine) with a deep point blade to achieve the different earring shapes. That’s an easy DIY project that even I can do!
Easy steps to make leather earrings!
Supply List:
- Soft leather (or a faux leather sheet) in any color or thickness depending on preference
- Earring hooks (sometimes called ear wire or simply ear hook)
- Jump rings
- Jewelry pliers (or needle nose)
- Pair of sharp scissors
- A leather hole puncher
- Pencil
- Plastic ruler
*Optional: Beads, charms, or other embellishments
Instructions:
1. Use a pencil to draw out the shape of earring in the same size and shape on two pieces of leather. Be sure to also use a ruler if you want to make sure that earrings are equal in size to each other. The size and shape of your earrings will depend on your personal preference, but the most popular shapes for earrings are ovals, triangles, circles and squares.
2. Cut out the shape from the two pieces of leather.
3. Use a leather hole punch to make a small hole in the top of each piece of leather. You can use a ruler here also to make sure that the hole is centered.
4. Attach a jump ring to the top of the earring by threading through the hole.
5. Thread the earring hook through the jump ring and then use a pair of pliers to close the jump ring.
6. If you want to add a little texture to the earring design then you use embellishments by gluing or sewing the small pieces onto the leather shapes.
7. Make the second earring by following steps 2-4 and then enjoy your new jewelry!
Tips:
- You can use a variety of colors, thicknesses and textures of leather to create unique earrings.
- Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut out the leather.
- Try to use a leather hole punch that is the same size as the jump rings you are using. This way the holes will be more evenly sized.
- Make sure to close the jump rings carefully so as to avoid damaging the leather.
- Be cautious not to over tighten the jump rings or you at this point you may damage the leather.
- Don’t forget to have fun and be creative! It’s a relatively easy project and there are endless possibilities when it comes to designing your own DIY leather earrings.
