Considered a jukebox musical, the broadway production delves into the life and talent of music sensation Tina Turner. It’s an inspiring journey of a woman who overcomes all odds to achieve true love in music and life. While the musical about the Queen of Rock n’ Roll’s life has been around since it’s opening on the West End in 2018, this is the first time it has been in St. Louis. Which is quite surprising given that a significant part of her life was spent in our fine city. In fact she graduated from Sumner High School in 1958.

Before Tina Turner became a solo performer, she led what seems like an entire life ahead of her time. She was Anna Mae Bullock who came from humble beginnings in Tennessee before her music’s rise in St. Louis during her teen years. This musical covers all the topics. Her early life was one surrounded by discord and abuse between her parents and only continued years later in her own first marriage. The relationship, rearing, and protection from of a loving grandmother ultimately plays a pivotal role in the direction of the life of legendary artist Tina Turner. It’s an uplifting comeback story and you’ll see it all at the Fabulous Fox.

Playwright and Pulitzer Prize winner Katori Hall helped to bring the Tina Turner musical to life on the West End. The show first opened in London’s Aldwych Theatre on March 21, 2018.

Mayor Tishaura Jones has declared that the entire month of November in St. Louis is Tina Turner month. This Proclamation was delivered to the cast on stage at the end of opening night. It was such a beautiful recognition and tribute to the life of this remarkable woman. Simply the best ending.

As with any show, I over heard mixed reviews from people as I left the theatre last night. Everyone always has a difference of opinion on what makes a best musical. For me, I really enjoyed the show and would see it again.
