I took my oldest daughter with me to media night for Wicked at the Fox Theatre and it was indeed wickedly fabulous. The first time she ever saw the show was with me in NYC and now St. Louis. I told her that means next time will have to be in London’s West End. That’s goals.

What has made the Wicked musical so endearing to audiences worldwide?
From the moment that Winnie Holzman created this masterpiece and helped bring it to the stage in 2003, Wicked has quickly become one of the best musicals. It took musical theater to a whole new level, literally by defying gravity. As children we grew up knowing all about the fabled Emerald City and land of Oz. From Dorothy the farm girl who lived in Kansas to the Wicked Witch of the East’s ruby slippers to the wonderful wizard of Oz to the scarecrow, tin man and cowardly lion, we thought that we knew the story in its entirety. But we never knew all that much about the Wicked Witch other than her army of flying monkeys and her need take possession of the sparkly red slippers. Where did she come from and what was her story? I think that’s what has created this cultural phenomenon.

Wicked will make you realize that Glinda isn’t the only good witch. You’ll gain a whole different perspective of the witch with green skin and as you leave the show on a high note you’ll think, “I like that witch.”

This musical has brought about so many popular songs. It’s truly hard to say when is the best. All of them? Songs like Defying Gravity and Popular are easily the most recognizable.

How many languages has Wicked been translated into?
In preparation for the show I found myself listening to all the above show tunes and great songs associated with it from the speaker in my kitchen. It brought so many memories of all the performances of Wicked that I’ve seen! As I listened to the original Broadway cast recording with Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, I was surprised when Alexa threw out “Popular” in Spanish. Just as catchy and fun in Spanish as it is in English! It got me to thinking just how many different languages has Wicked been performed in. So I did some research. To this point the musical Wicked has been translated into six different languages, Japanese, German, Dutch, Spanish, Korean, and Portuguese. Truly a worldwide show. I’m surprised it hasn’t been done in French yet!
