How to Create Your Own Countdown to Christmas with Books

Wrap each Christmas book in festive wrapping paper.

Wrap enough Christmas books for 25 days. Or 12 or 15 days. An advent calendar can be any number of days that you want to countdown!

Place number stickers or numbered gift tags on each wrapped book.

Unwrap a book each day as you countdown to Christmas!

What types of books can you include in a Christmas advent calendar?

  • Christmas picture books are always a good idea because they are simple and often produce fond memories for the entire family.
  • Winter books and other seasonal books that are winter themed.
  • Use Christmas stories that are a mix of classic and modern. (Bluey, anyone?)
  • Go educational with books about the different traditions and/or history of Christmas.
  • Do all the books have to be Christmas themed? Of course not! Books that promote kindness, generosity, and peace are perfect for celebrating the Christmas season.

What books are we including in our DIY children’s Christmas book advent calendar?

The first book in our advent calendar is The Polar Express. It’s a gift that was given to us by some dear friends in San Antonio almost 20 years ago. Since then our family boards the Polar Express at Union Station each year and the train has become a traditional part of our holiday season.

The last book wrapped up in our advent calendar (that we will open on December 24th) is The Night Before Christmas. Fitting, don’t you think?

There are just so many different Christmas-themed books to include in a DIY children’s Christmas book advent calendar!

Other children’s books you can include in a Christmas book advent calendar:

How to Build a Children’s Christmas Book Advent Calendar on a Budget

Thrift stores are a great place to find books for very little cost.

Use Christmas books from your own bookshelf.

Collect books throughout the year and look for sales.

Pick up some books at your local dollar store.

Visit your local library and check out some Christmas books. To keep the library books in good condition, don’t wrap the books. In this case you can place a book in a bag for kids to look in each day.

When is the best time to open an advent calendar?

The time of day for opening an advent calendar really depends on when you want to do it. There’s no specific time of day that it has to be done. Bedtime stories could even be the perfect time!

Now grab a mug of hot chocolate, a special book that’s Christmasy, settle down near the fireplace or Christmas tree as a family and enjoy the holiday season together.
