I got my eyebrows waxed for the first time when I was 12. Twelve years old + middle school = so horrifically awkward it hurts. But maybe that’s a story for another post. However, I was trying to find myself in the beauty world and my crazy, never before shaped
over grown adolescent bushes eyebrows needed some help. I was at the mercy of the stylist and she did a fine job. From then on, some 14 years, I’ve basically kept the same shape. Maybe a little thinner at some times or a little straighter at others. For the most part though, it’s been a low arch without much expression. I want to CHANGE this. But how?
First let’s talk about some of the varying degrees of eyebrows (I’ll stick to pictures of celebrities for examples). Then we’ll get to mine. Oh I have some good pictures, you’ll want to hang out for these!
First, we have the big ones. The “natural look.” I personally think there is a good way and a bad way to wear these brows.
Lily Collins has the most striking kind. I know there are lots of thoughts about them. I personally think they could be cleaned up a bit, but good for her for sticking to her guns. (source: http://laradevganmd.com/blog/2013/10/1/what-makes-lily-collins-eyebrows-so-pretty)
I’m not hating on keeping your brows full. I think Audrey Hepburn did it so well. So well in fact I never even noticed them! They always looked clean and natural. Well done. (Source: http://emilyboydmakeup.com/tag/eyebrow-powder/)
Liz Taylor also did a fine job sporting the fuller brow. I think the key thing here with larger eyebrows is to make sure they’re clean. Meaning, give those babies some clean lines! (source: http://beautyshallsavetheworld.com/2011/04/elizabeth-taylor-the-beauty-the-brow/)
Let’s move onto the “tweezer happy” kind of eyebrow. Really wasn’t this just the 90’s and early 2000’s? I do suppose this wasn’t the first time in history that the thinner brow was the “thing”. During medieval times skinny eyebrows on a pale face was the thing. I’m not sure I agree, but it’s what was going on.
Drew Barrymore had her thin eyebrow times. We have them for a reason. Don’t remove them. (Source: http://www.xovain.com/makeup/fuller-brows-change-your-face-for-the-better)
Gwen Stefani lived in eyebrow pencil land for a while. It terrified me. I’m glad this beauty fad is over. (source: http://www.cambio.com/2014/12/07/lucy-hales-eyebrows-werent-always-on-fleek-photo/)
Now onto mine! There have been times when I’m pretty proud of my eyebrows. Other times they’ve been so crazy when the light hits my face just right half of them disappear. I’m not sure how this happens. But let’s talk about it. Disclaimer. My eyebrows “do” different things. My left one arches higher when I smile. Crazy, I know. But they’re not uneven, just sassy! Throwback time!
I was 17. Tweezed into a an uneven “shape,” somewhat of a paisley shape. Hmm, yes, these were my eyebrows for a LONG time. I’m pretty sure this is how they were waxed originally, but I can’t be certain.
Hello 19! Threading. Phenomenal clean up! I mean really, easily the BEST hair removal I’ve ever had. It was so clean and smooth. But, they were TOO straight! What in the world?!
Wedding day. I was 20. They were thin on the outside. I had no idea using an eyebrow pencil was amazing. Whenever I thought about using a pencil I was thrown back into eyebrow pencil world and scared I’d come out looking crazy! So I’d never used one. I wish I had. The sun was unkind in a few pictures. Where did the outside of my eyebrows go!?
Today. I’m 26. I don’t hate them, I kind of like them. They’re a bit fuller, but still just not my “natural” shape. I think there’s some potential here!
For the longest time I thought I could have “bushy” eyebrows or pencil thin ones. I never thought I could re-shape them into something natural for me. I recently bought a waxing kit and in it were three eyebrow guides. Three similar but different shapes. I put one up to my eyebrow that I wanted and realized that it can’t happen. YET! I’ve been doing some research and I’m prepared to reshape and regrow areas of my eyebrows that haven’t had the chance in over a decade. When I’m done I’m hoping for something like this. But I guess it’ll just depend on where the brow hairs grow in and what my “natural shape” is.
I think it’s a process that we all go through, where we have those awkward in between stages. We’re all still learning, right? I do, however, believe your eyebrows should be apart of your face, not steal the show from your amazing eyes. I know you all have them! That’s what I’m hoping to achieve by the end of my journey.
- pick out the shape I want
- use a white makeup pencil to draw the shape I want on my eyebrows
- tweeze everything outside of the white lines
- let the naked space inside the lines grow
- panic because it’s getting longer!
- trim as needed
- repeat ^all of this until I’m satisfied 😀
What are your thoughts on eyebrows?! Do you like yours? Feel like you’ve had the same ones forever, and want a change? What celebrity had brows that you just love?
