Why Wasn’t It’s A Wonderful Life An Instant Hit?

The movie It’s A Wonderful Life first hit theaters in 1946. Frank Capra’s film wasn’t an instant hit. While it featured many Hollywood stars, movie goers weren’t at all thrilled with the storyline and the movie was a flop. I grew up hearing this fact from my grandparents who saw the film when it first came out.

I’m not really sure why it wasn’t a hit when it first premiered and my grandparents weren’t either. After all it has always been a tradition for our family to watch each year. One that began with my grandparents. They loved the movie and the story. Particularly my grandfather had a fondness for the plot of the man who awoken to a world without himself in it and able to then discover why he needed to be part of it.

Perhaps the movie was ahead of its time and that’s why people weren’t initially drawn to it. Or it was too dark and depression for a time when people craved holly and jolly. Whatever the reason it has since become a true holiday classic that is now beloved by many.

No Man Is A Failure It’s A Wonderful Life Quote

It’s A Wonderful Life is filled with many beautiful quotes and messages. One of the most popular is conveyed at the end of the film with a handwritten message found in a book. Clarence Odbody (played by Henry Travers) leaves behind a gift for George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) to serve as a reminder of something so very important. And thanking him for his wings.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The book is a favorite of Clarence, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and the inscription reads: Dear George, remember no man is a failure who has friends. Thanks for the wings. Love, Clarence.
