Reflections of The Muny 2024 Season in Forest Park

Muny Magic is something that members of our community have long been accustomed to during the summer months. So many of the best musical performances take the stage at The Muny. Indeed our unique outdoor theater is also part of Broadway history with stars from NYC aspiring to one day perform right here in the Midwest. It’s a rite of passage in the Broadway musical world and a treasure among rising stars.

Such a gorgeous setting in Forest Park!

Muny Free Seats

The Muny has a remarkable tradition of bringing the arts to the community. Each show has over 1000 free seats so everyone has the opportunity to experience The Muny. The seats are found in the back row of the theater. Such an incredible gift!

Muny 2024 Season Line Up

Les Miserables

I had to miss the first week of the season with Les Misérables because we were in St. George, UT. While on vacation, I did attend another outdoor theatre when I saw Anastasia at Tuacahn. It should be not a surprise to learn that everyone at Tuacahn raves about the oldest and largest in the country that we know and love.

Dreamgirls: June 27th-July 3rd

Dreamgirls is filling the air of Forest Park with Motown and it’s a show that you do not want to miss. Your heart will be tugged as you experience the depiction of the tough world that is showbiz. When it comes to performers, there’s often a price of their success. Dreamgirls takes you on a whirlwind ride  And it’s the only time that I’ve EVER experienced a standing ovation DURING a performance and not just at the close of an Act.

So much talent is on stage but prepare yourself now to be blown away by Tiffany Mann as Effie. She’s the recipient of that mid performance standing ovation and was just wow.

Stay tuned for the rest of the season!

Disney’s The Little Mermaid – July 8th thru July 16th

Disney is made even more magical with some Muny magic! Every season The Muny has at least one show that is perfect for the entire family to enjoy together. Disney’s Little Mermaid is that show for 2024 and it does not disappoint.

You’ll feel like a kid again as the orchestra swells with the music from the deep that you’ve come to know and love. The entire cast is amazing. Savy Jackson can carry a note longer than I’ve heard in a long time and absolutely shines on stage. Nicole Parker (with the help of her man-made tentacles on stage) brings Ursula to life and it was hard not to think of her the other wicked villain that she has portrayed. (Or was Elphaba a villain? I don’t think so! )

In addition to the beautiful sounds, this show has colorful costumes that truly make the set, action, visual effects, and comedy that will have you laughing out loud. Fergie L. Philippe is amazing as Sebastian and I believe he brings some ad lib to his comedic part. (Someone please tell me he did that with the bit about the 7 minute number and it’s not something he does for every show.) To top it all off, this production features the Muny Teens/Kids and so many Muny veterans.

I cannot say enough about this show and it’s one that you need to see before it leaves the stage on July 16th.

Want to go beyond the magic of the Muny? ✨ Prince Eric (Michael Maliakel) is in concert July 18th-19th at Blue Strawberry. I love that many performers make a stop at this intimate venue before they leave the Lou.

Fiddler on the Roof – July 19th thru July 25th

From The Muny: “Fiddler on the Roof returns for its 11th Muny production. The legendary musical tells the story of Tevye the milkman, who clings to the Jewish customs of Anatevka, his hometown in pre-Revolutionary Russia. As his daughters question these old-fashioned traditions and the world changes ominously around them, Tevye is challenged to find a new way to learn and to love.”

Waitress – July 30th thru August 5th

From The Muny: “Waitress promises to be a sweet slice of Muny heaven! Featuring memorable music and lyrics by Grammy Award winner Sara Bareilles, the story centers on Jenna, a baker who dreams of escaping her job, small town and rocky marriage. Adapted from the 2007 film, it’s a satisfying celebration of friendship, motherhood and the magic of a homemade pie. A Muny and U.S. regional premiere.”

In the Heights – August 9th thru August 15th

From the Muny: “Before Hamilton, the visionary Lin-Manuel Miranda made a splash on Broadway with In the Heights. Set against the beats of salsa and hip-hop, the acclaimed musical tells the story of Usnavi, who longs to pick up his roots and move away from Washington Heights, the tight-knit New York City neighborhood that shaped him. This vibrant show will fill your heart with its spellbinding choreography and infectious energy. A Muny premiere.”

Anything Goes – August 19th thru August 25th

From the Muny: “Cole Porter’s hilarious musical comedy Anything Goes debuted nearly 90 years ago and was last seen on our stage in 1999. In this tap-dancing romp on the high seas, two unlikely pairs on the S.S. American set sail for true love and a boatload of comedic chaos. Unforgettable songs include “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top” and the showstopping title tune, “Anything Goes.” Come aboard for some good old-fashioned fun!”
