This day is a dandy one and also so very special to me. Veterans Day is a day for everyone to remember all veterans. A day to honor all service men and women who have devoted much to our country or are currently serving in our military. It’s also my day to remember my own veterans. Both of my grandfathers are veterans. One served in the marines and the other in the army.
This is my veteran who is no longer with us.
My Boompa.
He’s often on my mind but on this Veterans Day especially I remember him.
For much of his life he sported a flat top. It’s how I always knew him. From my childhood into my adulthood he maintained that haircut. It was part of his army look during the Korean War and it stayed with him forever.
He gave so many years of his life in Korea. So much time away from his family. He lost friends all around him during the amphibious landing. When he came home he was different and haunted by his time away. Korea took much from him. He always said that he would be buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery because it was owed to him. And he was. It was owed to him because he gave something to his country that he could never get back.
He survived Korea but I think that’s why he continued to wear the flat top all of those years. It was part of him. Korea was part of him. What he experienced could never be taken away. Never forgotten.
Thank you to all veterans. Your service will never be forgotten.
Happy Veterans Day
