While Missouri does have more than a few weekend getaways to explore, The Elms hotel and spa in Excelsior Springs is quite the hidden gem. It’s one of the most romantic places in the Midwest and history lovers will enjoy the vintage nostalgia of the hotel from days gone by. Most definitely makes my list of best romantic getaways and it’s a weekend getaway in Missouri that you do not want to miss out on.
Best Weekend Getaway in Missouri for Couples: The Elms in Excelsior Springs
My husband and I were invited to take a weekend getaway in Missouri at the newly renovated Elms Hotel and Spa. And was it every amazing! The Elms is a historic hotel with modern amenities less than 4 hours west of St. Louis and just 30 minutes northeast of Kansas City. I highly recommend booking a romance package that is the Stay & Spa. Spa services always provide the ultimate in relaxation.

History of The Elms Hotel
The small town of Excelsior Springs became a popular destination in the late 1800’s for those seeking the natural wonders of healing from the mineral springs found in the area. Destroyed by fire on two separate occasions, The Elms hotel has been rebuilt from the ground up three times and has had multiple renovations down over the years. It has a rich history of presidents, stars and even mobsters who have stayed on the property over the years. Not surprisingly you can even take a ghost tour of The Elms. (I went on one back in the spring when I was there for a girl’s trip.)
Today The Elms boasts luxurious accommodations, a full service spa with Grotto, beautiful gardens and grounds, fine dining and a destination to just escape from it all.
All the attention to detail in this boutique hotel is amazing and large window abound in this romantic destination!

What is there to do in Excelsior Springs?
With its historic inn feel, The Elms is situated in the perfect location to access the historic downtown district of Excelsior Springs. Just a short walk away and you will find the historic downtown that will remind you of a quaint little Hallmark Christmas movie town. East Broadway is lined with boutiques and shops to explore. And nature lovers will find the natural beauty of the surrounding forest park areas to be a must see. (Particularly the walkways to hike up to the serene setting of Siloam Mountain Park.) If you are looking for a golf course or other local attractions, The Elms has a great list of options in their area guide here. Most seem to be just a short drive away, but we found that we didn’t drive at all during our stay. Even walked over to Wabash BBQ one evening for dinner. The perfect place to get some smoked brisket!
Staying at The Elms is truly the perfect getaway and we had the absolute best time. It’s a great way to celebrate a special occasion or just unwind from the day to day.
