Last night my guy and I were able to get away for a much needed date night at The Fabulous Fox here in St. Louis. It was opening night of Love Never Dies and there’s always something extra special about when a show first opens. Lots of anticipation and excitement tends to fill the air. To experience a show at The Fox Theatre is truly to experience amazement. We are quite proud of our unique venue here in The Lou. So much beautiful architecture and ornate fixtures. The theatre also has a rich history; originally opening in 1929 as a place to watch motion pictures and then after a time of being empty, was resurrected in the 1980’s. A true St. Louis gem and treasure.

I really missed seeing the iconic chandelier from Phantom, but was able to look up at this pretty.

I must admit that I went into this production thinking that it wasn’t going to be all that amazing. So many of my friends had seen it already in other cities and had left disappointed. But in all honesty it was so much better than I expected it to be! Now keep in mind that we are a house divided because my dear husband didn’t like it at all.

Love Never Dies Has Arrived At The St. Louis Fabulous Fox

The story line was clearly different than the original and at times the sequel was all over the place. However, it suited the Coney Island setting. The East Coast location is known for its history of sideshow acts and bizarre wonder.

Love Never Dies takes place 10 years later from Phantom of the Opera so there’s a whole missing life. The characters have went in different directions, but come together again in Coney Island.

Can you tell that I don’t want to give very much away? You will definitely have to see it for yourself and then let me know what you think. Ultimately I liked the show and, as a huge Phantom fan, I would totally see it again. I can see though how others might not have been impressed. To even try and compare it to the original is not possible. Composers and playwrights will forever try to replicate what was done in Phantom of the Opera and they will always fall short. Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber created a masterpiece that I believe can never be topped. That all said… The music in Love Never Dies is amazing, the performers are talented, the costumery and stage sets are breathtaking. All reasons for why I enjoyed the show. Do I wish the storyline had went in a different direction? Yes, but there are so many other qualities that make the production beautiful.
